The IET Excellence Awards recognize the achievements of international students to the state, rewarding those who contribute back to community empowerment showcasing the Australian VET frameworks. The award is provided by Trade Investment Queensland (TIQ) in recognition of investment in promoting best practices of the Australian Education programs to the world.

Gold Coast-based Envirotech Education international student, Simon Witt, is the winner of the IET Excellence VET Student of the Year award for Queensland. He achieved the award for his participation at Envirotech Education Innovation Hub – Accelerator program, connected with the Diploma of Project Management.

Mr. Witt’s final project was the design, development, and leadership of a sustainable volunteer tourism program, focusing on empowerment of coastal communities in attractive surfing location in Tonga.

The project was planned under the innovation hub, accelerator program, supporting a three-month volunteer tourism program at Tonga, all managed by Mr. Witt’s, from the design, development, planning, logistics, finance, procurement, human resource management and on ground management of volunteers.

The outstanding outcome presented both a successful building and installation of the Childcare Community Center and the great educational entrepreneur project success, promoting the Australian VET exciting Vocational Education and Training (VET) programs practical application.

Main Challenges

  • Mr Witt is the first student to study in Envirotech’s Innovation Hub - Accelerator Program. This is a multidisciplinary program were students from various departments work together on the same project. Since Simon was the first student, Envirotech team provided both mentorship and teamwork.
  • The idea was that the fees paid for the trip return to the community, who provides the free accommodation and food, the fees collected for this purpose are invested in the building of a Childcare – Community Center.
  • The trip also included several hours of daily volunteering in the erecting of the Community Center, and extensive hospitality and activities by the Tonga hosts.

Solutions

The Diploma of Project Management includes units of sustainability and promotes social sustainability. Simon who has received a Silver GECKO award, a week before, for his continuing work on environmentally sustainable projects, concluded that the award has given him the energy to focus further on Envirotech Education’s new Thursday Island-based research and course development. About the program, Mr Witt said: “The Accelerator Program gave me the skills, support and framework to undertake a challenging project, funding, organising and managing the construction of a school in Tonga”.
