Envirotech Education marine habitat conservation and restoration student, Susy James, is the Gold Coast Student Excellence Award Winner on November 27, 2020. The award night was conducted at Movie World Gold Coast.

Envirotech marine and sustainability students competed with other Gold Coast universities and colleges, such as Bond University, Somerset College and Griffith University and we are proud to have won the award of Excellence in Protecting our Environment together with Susy James.

Dr. Maria Luiza Schmitz Fontes, Envirotech Education marine trainer and assessor, nominated Susy for the excellence award as she is an inspiration!” as a person who took the most meaningful career change for the better of the Australian community and natural environment.

Main Challenges

Susy James has demonstrated great passion, courage and dedication to the Australian community, by making a huge change in her career during the COVID 19 pandemic. She is one of the top students of her course. In only 6 months of studying with us she already volunteered with cetacean conservation, Seagrass Watch, and has currently helped with the rehabilitation and release of 4 marine turtles. Susy also volunteers with SeaBird Rescue, working with marine turtles once a week and with Humpback and high rises. "After 25 years of working for Qantas and being aware of the environmental damage of the industry, I am ready to invest in career change to help the world and oceans to overcome the damage and restore ecosystems”.

Solutions

Susy James id undertaking the Certificate III in Marine Habitat Conservation and Restoration at Envirotech Education. There are no entry requirements for this course, no previous skills or knowledge required, and the accreditation is completed in just over one year. There are plenty of opportunities for practical experience and for volunteering opportunities from Byron Bay and up to north Queensland. She is undertaking her coral restoration practical experience the week following the award nomination, together with other Envirotech Education staff and students in Whitsundays Islands, while helping in a local community coral restoration project.
